--> --> Feb. 13: Marks named NAIA Division II Player of the Week Ashland Daily Tidings Southern Oregon University women's basketball point guard Sara Marks earned NAIA Division II Player of the Week accolades Tuesday for her efforts in leading the Raiders to key weekend Cascade Conference victories. The 5-5 Marks, only the second SOU basketball player to win the national honor, averaged a league-best 24 points and 8.5 assists in Raider wins over 13th-ranked Eastern Oregon (90-81) and Albertson (83-72). The West Valley City, Utah native canned 11 of 20 shots against the league-leading Mountaineers Thursday en route to a game-high 28 points, her second highest game-scoring output of the season. Marks then went 7-for-19 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line for 20 points against Albertson on Saturday for her third straight team-high scoring effort and 16th of the season. The Eastern Utah Junior College transfer also came within one assist against Albertson of equaling a 26- year-old school game record of 13. The performances upped her season scoring average to a league-best 19.4 in conference games and helped second- place Southern Oregon (15-9 overall, 11-3 CCC) extend its winning streak to seven straight. Marks also leads the nine-team league in steals (2.83 per game) and is second in assists (4.62), 11th for 3-point makes (1.29), 12th for field-goal percentage (.444) and 15th for 3-point percentage (.323). Already a two-time conference player of the week selection, Marks is the program's first national honoree since two-time All-American Melissa Bogh received the kudo on Jan. 9, 1995. Marks enters the team's key weekend frays at Western Baptist and Warner Pacific with 406 season points, 42 away from 10th place on the school's all-time season scoring chart. · TEAM NOTES: The second-place Raiders still have a chance to earn a share of the school's fourth-league championship entering Friday's game against Western Baptist (21-10, 11-4) and Saturday's tilt against Warner Pacific (4-23, 1-12). A 2-0 weekend effort would land SOU no worse than a second-place circuit finish and result in a quarterfinal bye in the six-team league tournament and a home semifinal clash Feb. 22. Meanwhile, a weekend split would likely result in a third or fourth-place finish and a home quarterfinal game Feb. 19. An 0-2 weekend would tumble the Raiders to as low as fifth place, earning them a road game in the Feb. 19 quarterfinal round. Email your...
