Roy Musitelli | For the Tidings Kayla Moyse’s post-finals frown belied her play Friday during the Southern Oregon Conference girls tennis district tournament at Varsity Courts in Medford. Moyse had just breezed to her first-ever SOC singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Roseburg’s Masha Los, but she couldn’t help kicking herself for what might have been. Ever the perfectionist, Moyse had hoped to not drop a single game during the district tournament. She ended up losing three games overall in her four matches, including the two in the finals to the ever-hustling Los. “I wanted it to be zero,” Moyse sighed in slight disappointment. “I’ll settle for (three), but I’m a little upset with myself.” The junior might have been the only one upset with her performance Friday. She dominated her semifinal with South Medford’s Sam Ruffe for a 6-0, 6-1 win, then ran an already weary Los ragged in the championship finals. “She’s really good at running down balls,” Moyse said of Los. Part of Moyse’s strategy was to keep Los on the run, however, since the Roseburg senior had already been stretched to the limit by Ashland’s Brianna Lescher in their three-set semifinal. “That could’ve helped me out a little bit,” said Moyse. “(Los) has to be pretty tired because she’s been playing a lot today.” But the way the slender 5-foot-8 Grizzly was hitting the ball Friday, the extra time in the sun might not have mattered in the end. Moyse’s fluid swings from the baseline appeared effortless, yet still had more than enough pace to be overpowering. “I felt pretty free out there but I was still pretty errant, too,” said Moyse. “I had too many unforced errors, but I was also hitting some nice angles and a lot of winners, too.” While Moyse is confident she can go far at state in her third time around, she admits she’ll need to take her game to another level. “I’ve been to state twice before and I know what to expect from the girls,” she said. “It’s a different level so I have to be playing my top game. I get away with a lot of short balls here but you can’t there. You have to keep them deep.” Moyse has had the misfortune of bad draws in her previous state appearances but is hoping for better placement this time around. Last year, she lost in the second round to eventual champion Momei Qu of Wilson. In 2003, she had the same misfortune as she lost in the second round to eventual champion Emily Kirchem of Reynolds. “Hopefully I’ll get a better draw this year,” said Moyse, who remains undefeated on the season. “I’m playing a lot better and I’m still working on my game, so hopefully that will help, too.” Despite the efforts of Moyse and Lescher, who shook off the affects of mononucleosis to place third, Ashland came up short in its bid for a third straight SOC girls crown. Buoyed by a second straight doubles title by McKenzie Hilmer and Lauren Wilson, North Medford tallied 35 points to deny the Grizzlies (32). The Black Tornado also posted state-qualifying efforts from its doubles teams of Sonia Aguilera and Erica Schultz and Alex Jenner and Sarah Louie. Roseburg and South Medford tied for third with 20 points apiece, followed by Klamath Union (19) and Grants Pass (14). The top four placers in singles and doubles advance to the Class 4A state tournament, set May 19-21 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.
