--> --> Hannon to get honorary degree Ashland Daily Tidings It's never too late to get a sheepskin, especially during an election year. Portland State University will hand out five honorary degrees in its spring 2002 commencement ceremonies, slated for June 16. The degree, a Doctor of Humane Letters, is awarded to individuals with exemplary records of personal and public achievement. The recipients include Sen. Lenn Hannon, R-Ashland, advocate Joan Johnson, Wells Fargo President George Passadore, Waseda University president Takayasu Okushima and Waseda University professor Takehiko Kawase. According to PSU president Daniel Bertstine, the recipients have all "provided selfless service to Portland State University and to their own communities." In a statement, PSU cited the role Hannon played in 1999, when he was instrumental in reforming the Oregon University System funding model, which allowed the largest increase in higher education funding in more than 30 years.
