If a $3.3 million lighting district wins approval, more than 900 lights would be installed on residential and commercial streets. Supporters of the plan told commissioners that the lights would make the city less prone to crime and safer to navigate in stormy weather. "Lighting decreases crime tremendously," sheriff's Deputy Jennifer Bench told commissioners at a recent meeting. The district would cost 61 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, or $83 a year on a $136,000 house. Homeowners in the Southern Oregon city supported the idea at the meeting, but one business representative opposed it. "It just feels like another tax on business," said James Patterson, who represents Boise Cascade. Boise's assessed valuation is $28 million, which would mean it would pay about $17,000 annually for the district. Commissioners will have a public hearing on the matter July 28.
