Recently, we viewed a video on Helen Caldicott, an Australian woman who since 1960 has steadfastly informed the world on the dangers of nuclear weapons. As our organization has worked for global disarmament since World War I, we feel motivated to bring this matter to the public. Our government has tried to persuade us that we need newer nuclear weapons to protect us. We also hear that they wish to send these weapons into space. This scenario doesn’t make the USA a safer place or even affect the terrorists. Furthermore, the U.S. already has enough nuclear weapons to annihilate every living being, plant and animal, 10 times over. Think about it, do you want even more weapons to threaten our existence? It is time to say “enough” and work to find a way to use the money for peaceful pursuits. Frances Petschek Ashland Muslim reports are spineless American newspapers need to show a little spine and do more to cover the news about the dangers of radical Islam. What burns me about the recent cartoon fracas is that moderate Muslims cry foul and pontificate about how Islam is being shown no respect and that it is a religion of peace, when brave Muslims such as Hirsi Ali and Salman Rushdie, who speak out against fanatical excesses, have to live with the constant threat of assassination. There is nothing peaceful about a religion that allows beheadings of kidnapped innocents to be filmed and offered up to TV networks for broadcast or that allowed the deliberate disemboweling of an Algerian woman by an Imam just because she dared to remove her veil and show her face. For the sake of our respective civilizations we need to continue to push back on this BS until all the Islamic moderates say, “Enough!” Doug Forsyth Ashland Moderation takes courage I must compliment Rob Asghar on his article (Feb. 9) urging moderate Muslims to speak up. That takes courage in today’s world. In the Mideast many “moderate” Palestinians have been assassinated. I’m sure there were some Germans who opposed Hitler, but it was very dangerous to express opposition. I see no justification for Muslim rioting over Danish cartoons. Andrew Sullivan, in a Time Magazine essay (Feb. 13) said: “The Arab media run cartoons depicting Jews and the symbols of the Jewish faith with imagery indistinguishable from that used in the Third Reich. But I have yet to see Jews or Israelis threaten the lives of Muslims because of it.” Maynard Telpner Ashland Reject bond support for now What is up with the school board? They decline a profitable lease offer for the former Lincoln school building from a company that pays family-wage jobs to Ashland residents, and they do this to maintain the option to repopulate the substandard building with nonexistent students. A bond is being discussed that would raise funds to improve and repair district properties at great expense while they wax nostalgic over buildings we no longer need and almost certainly never will. The Lincoln school site should either be sold or profitably leased before they start reckoning our new tax burden. Until the school board recovers from its bizarre and costly fixation with Lincoln, I suggest all support for a new bond be withheld. Susan Marsden Ashland Lawmakers: Take a stand It is time (actually well past time) to take a stand. Please, Rep. Greg Walden, and all other representatives, vote against the supplemental appropriation bill for the military expenses in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am so enraged at the latest budget cuts in Medicaid and student loans. This new bill just adds insult to injury. Mary Lasley Ashland Bush’s new spy law threatens all The Bush administration’s new spy law destroys our constitutional free-speech and privacy rights. To replace our speech and privacy freedoms there may some day be a sign on the White House lawn reading, “Jobs open. Gestapo wanted.” The House of Representatives and the Senate have already given too much power to all the presidents and their shadowy corporate billionaires. The more powerful the presidents and their corporate billionaires become, the more rapid we citizens will lose our constitutional rights. Suffocate your politicians with postcards, letters, e-mails and telephone calls. Tell them you will vote them out of office and then do it. G.
