--> --> Tax relief measure heads to House SALEM (AP) - Oregon taxpayers would be free to ignore advance federal refunds when calculating their state tax returns for 2001 under a bill approved Tuesday by the Senate. The measure, SB975, is designed to accompany President Bush's tax cut package and would apply only to federal refunds and credits received because of the new 10 percent federal bracket applied in 2001. With the new federal tax law, checks will be mailed to taxpayers this summer that represent an "advance refund" of a new 10 percent rate. The checks will be up to $300 for single people and $600 for married couples. About one-fourth of Oregon taxpayers will get nothing because they don't pay federal taxes. The cost to Oregon's 2001-2003 budget would be about $17 million. Sen. Randy Miller said under Bush's tax plan, Oregonians will get a total of about $550 million in refunds and credits. The measure, approved on a 26-3 vote, now goes to the House for consideration. Email your...
