--> --> Thorndike wins commuter award Ashland Daily Tidings Overlooking its selectee's ownership of a sport utility vehicle, The Rogue Valley Transportation District handed its 2001 Jackson County Bicycle Committee Transportation Hero Award to lawyer Dan Thorndike, a bicycle commuter who prefers taking the long way home. Thorndike, 46, has commuted by bicycle for the past 22 years. For the past 18 years, Thorndike has avoided the shorter route between Medford and Ashland, preferring a more bike-friendly route that adds an extra 10 miles on the daily trek to his workplace, Medford Fabrication. On an annual basis, Thorndike commutes some 10,000 miles, or about 180,000 miles over the past 18 years. Thorndike calculates his efforts translate into a reduction of three and a half tons of pollutants he would have emitted over the same period, had he used a car. Thorndike's SUV is reportedly reserved for use on weekends. The award presentation for Thorndike takes place Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at RVTD's Front Street Station, on 200 S. Front St., in Medford.
