A 1,225-square-foot warehouse planned to house the Ashland Emergency Food Bank should be completed by July on the former site of Handyman Hardware, said Alan DeBoer, former Ashland mayor. The food bank is the first phase in what DeBoer hopes will be a social services center and affordable housing complex on the Ashland Street property. The food bank will vacate cramped quarters at a day-use shelter operated by the Interfaith Care Community of Ashland on Second Street, said food bank Board President Jim Martin. The ICCA plans to move, which would have forced the food bank to find a new location, Martin added. The food bank will rent from DeBoer for $500 per month. DeBoer purchased the Handyman property in February 2004 and plans to spend $87,000 to build the warehouse. Any future buyer of the property at 2200 Ashland St. would also take on the rental agreement, DeBoer said. The ICCA decided in October to sell its Second Street property because neighbors complained they were harassed by ICCA’s homeless clients.
