Matt Amrhein | For the Tidings VANCOUVER, Wash. — Kelso (Wash.) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Ashland 5-4 in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth Northwest Regional Tournament on Thursday. Ashland took a 4-1 lead on Lewis Sebrell’s bases-clearing triple to deep right field in the fourth, but Kelso scored two in the fifth and two in the seventh to hand Ashland its first loss of the 12-team tournament. Kelso completed the comeback with a triple to right-center that scored two runs. Sebrell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace Ashland’s batting lineup, while Max Gordon went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Lucas Edmands went 1-for-2 with a walk. Ashland was held to five hits — by far its lowest output of the tournament so far — by the Kelso pitching staff. Charlie Sebrell started on the mound for Ashland and gave up one run on two hits in three solid innings of work. Garrett Tygerson entered in the fourth and surrendered two runs on three hits in 1 1-3 innings. Gordon pitched the last two innings and was tagged for two runs on one hit. Ashland’s defense made a clutch play in the fifth to preserve a one-run lead. With the tying run on third base, the Kelso batter hit a ground ball to Ashland shortstop Casey Skolnik. Skolnik fielded the ball then fired it to Ashland catcher Lewis Sebrell, who tagged out the runner attempting to score. Kelso, the southern Washington champion, score in the first to take the early lead. Ashland tied the game in the second on three walks and Gordon’s RBI ground out. After Ashland took a 4-1 lead, Kelso crept to within one run by scoring two in the fifth on a single, a walk and a two-run triple. Ashland must win its final pool play game Saturday morning against Calgary, Alberta in order to advance to the four-team championship bracket. The semifinals and finals will both be played on Sunday, with the winner moving on to the Babe Ruth World Series.
