The NCAA-I FCS (formally NCAA Division I-AA) Bengals notched a 37-11 win over the NAIA Raiders, but most college football insiders thought the margin of victory would be much greater. The Raiders (2-1) scheduled the game largely for financial reasons: they walked away with $40,000. Freshman quarterback Russel Hill completed 20 of 31 passes, including a 70-yard touchdown strike to Eddie Thompson, to lead the Bengals' offense. Thompson had nine catches for 101 yards. Senior running back Josh Barnett added 140 yards rushing on 14 carries for Idaho State, which rolled up a 512-119 advantage in total offense as it won its season opener under first-year head coach John Zamberlin. Southern Oregon (1-2) scored a safety in the first quarter when Joe Nelthorpe's snap was short of Idaho State punter Dan Zeidman, who fell on the ball in the end zone. The Raiders trailed just 3-2 at that point. But on Southern Oregon's first play from scrimmage following the safety, Terrance Calloway picked off a Bryan Lee-Lauduski pass and raced 45 yards for his first career touchdown and a 10-2 Bengals' lead. Idaho State pushed its lead to 20-2 early in the second quarter as it got a 45-yard field goal from Brandon Jones and then Thompson's spectacular 70-yard touchdown catch that featured several cutbacks. "He (Thompson) can do some amazing things after catching the ball," said Zamberlin, who came to Idaho State after 10 years as the head coach at Central Washington. "That touchdown was something special." In the second half, Southern Oregon was outscored just 17-9 as placekicker Corey O'Neill booted field goals of 42, 45 and 28 yards. O'Neill is a South Medford High graduate who transferred to SOU from College of the Siskiyous. The Raiders had no running game, finishing with a minus-24 yards on the ground. Lee-Lauduski provided SOU with its only offense, completing 16 of 35 passes for 143 yards. However, Lee-Lauduski was intercepted three times. Idaho State also picked up five sacks, had 12 tackles for loss and forced two fumbles. Sterling Mennear led the Bengals with nine tackles and Geo Simmons added four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Southern Oregon receiver Kevin Holtzman, who entered the game with 20 catches for 286 yards and four touchdowns in the Raiders' previous two games, was held to one catch for 50 yards. Tim Greenidge led the SOU receivers with six catches for 50 yards. Idaho State, which meets Oregon State in Corvallis next Saturday, hurt its cause with 14 penalties for 150 yards. Women's soccer At Atherton, Calif., California Baptist scored all its goals in the first half, dropping Southern Oregon 3-0. The loss dropped SOU to 1-2-1 on the season. Sara Switzer and Morgan Spencer had the Raiders' only two shots of the game, while the Lancers took 21 shots. SOU goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins had seven saves. Girls soccer At Churchill, a Churchill shot attempt ricocheted off the leg of an Ashland defender and into the net as the Grizzlies were handed their first loss of the season, 1-0, on Saturday. The fortuitous bounce of the low-flying shot from 25 yards caught Ashland goalkeeper Catie Pratt out of position. Although they were not able to capitalize, the Grizzlies (0-1-2) outshot Churchill in the second half after the Lancers dominated both ends of the field before the break. Women's volleyball At La Grande, Shanna Claflin blasted 21 kills, Richelle Millsap added 19 and Lindsey Stone had 55 assists as Southern Oregon trounced Eastern Oregon in a Cascade Conference clash Saturday. The Raiders bounced back from Friday's loss to Albertson with a 30-23, 27-30, 30-17, 30-19 victory to improve to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. Eastern fell to 2-4 and 1-1. SOU also got a team-high 17 digs from Emily Stone and 15 kills and six blocks from Mia Wortel.
