Keith Matthew Maupin, is being held prisoner by Islamic soldiers who stated, "We are keeping him to be exchanged for some of the prisoners captured by the occupation forces." Our spokesman Dan Senor said, "There will be no negotiation with the insurgents about releasing hostages." Well, he certainly isn't hurting the Islamic insurgents, or himself, but he is hurting one of our sons. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld have made the same statement, "We will not negotiate." Of course, if they or their sons were hostages (we know that could never happen) there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth in the White House and they would give away our whole nation to save their worthless hides. If all our veterans and all of our people do not rise up and demand that our government negotiate the release of Keith Matthew Maupin and all the other American prisoners of war then we are disgrace to our nation. De Vaul Ashland Densmore is a needed change Who is the county commissioner who secretly wrote to the Department of Environmental Quality asking them to weaken air quality rules, even though the vast majority of residents wanted current strong rules upheld? Who is the county commissioner who tried to reduce the size of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument? Who is the county commissioner who secretly wrote to the Bureau of Land Management asking that they cut more timber? The answer in every case is Sue Kupillas. I think it's time for a change. Vote for no secrets. Vote for responsibility. Vote for integrity. Vote for honesty. Vote for Sue Densmore for county commissioner. Tom Dimitre Ashland Thanks to ski area association Returning from a trip in early April, we were pleasantly surprised to find the Mt. Ashland Ski Road cleared of trash (two pick-up truckloads!) by a group of our neighbors and Mt. Ashland Ski Area volunteers. Thanks to all who participated, particularly our neighbor, Jack Sutherland, who got the ball rolling. We also want to thank Jeff Hanson, Mt. Ashland Ski Area General Manager, for responding to the residents' concerns quickly and positively and Ty Hisatomi, Mt. Ashland Ski Area Development Director, for organizing their volunteers. Living on the Mt. Ashland Ski Road for the past 26 years, we have come to know many of the ski area staff and have been the recipients of their help on more than one occasion. We are glad to have them as neighbors. Elaine and Jerry Shanafelt Ashland Bates has a proven record For more than 20 years, I have worked as an advocate at Legal Services, where I have worked with some of our community's most needy and most vulnerable citizens. Also, I am actively involved in the business community and work with local and state governments. I find that Rep. Alan Bates is the bright light in the state Legislature. He has worked diligently to represent the best interest of our community. Dr. Bates is a legislator who has proven he will resist pressure of special interests and maintain his independence of thought and action. He has done so whether this includes looking out for small business or making sure government is run as efficiently as possible to provides the best quality services to taxpayers. I urge you to support Rep. Bates as he strives to be elected to the Senate. Debra F. J. Lee Medford Kupillas a wolf in sheep's clothing I am a critic of the DEQ proposal because this area spent so much time and money cleaning it up and now this proposal wants to bring back the pollution. Then George Bush and his cronies are devastating the whole country with mercury pollution (the new Bush proposal is to increase the allowable amount of mercury 700 percent). So I went to various city council and county commissioners' meetings. I knew Sue Kupillas was up for re-election and since she says she is for "clean air," I thought we had somebody on our side. Then I was horrified to see the Sue Kupillas letter to the DEQ proposing to do away with the offset requirement. This is what is keeping our Valley clean! Is it a coincidence Sue Kupillas a received $5,000 donation from Boise-Cascade? Sue Kupillas wants to bring back black smoke to the Valley with no assurances that many new jobs will be created. Sue Kupillas sounds like a Republican. Fortunately, we have another option. Sue Densmore has worked to keep this Valley vibrant and clean. She worked out the recycling program and she is committed to keeping the valley clean and healthy (not inundated with tons of pollution). Sue Densmore will not sell us out to corporate greed.
