--> --> Oregon in brief Woman's car found in parking garage PORTLAND - Police searched Friday for a 56-year-old woman who has been missing since Tuesday evening. Minnie Young was last seen Tuesday at a relative's house. Her car was found Friday in a downtown Portland parking lot. Several homicide detectives were assigned to the case, said Sgt. Brain Schmautz, police spokesman. Young's family said it is unlike her to go somewhere without telling them. Relatives and friends said they knew something was wrong because Young missed several prearranged meetings with them. Recall underway for Baker City councilor BAKER CITY - Residents will vote next month on whether to recall Baker City Councilman Gary Dielman because he opposes opening city council meetings with a Christian prayer. John DeShiro, leader of Citizens for Responsible Government, on Thursday submitted 688 valid signatures on a recall petition. At least 531 signatures were required to force the election, scheduled for Dec. 17. The election, like all in Oregon, will be by mail-in ballot. According to state election laws, Dielman has five days to resign, canceling the vote. Dielman said he will not resign. "The successful filing of a petition to recall me from office as city councilor is a blow against free expression, against one's right to protest government policies, and against tolerance of persons of all religious faiths and no faith," Dielman said in a written statement. DeShiro said in addition to the 803 people who signed the recall petition, about 560 people have said they would vote against Dielman in a recall election. "We want to ensure that our democratic process and community values are protected," DeShiro said in a written statement. "And it appears a lot of people agree with us." Reedsport veterans memorial vandalised REEDSPORT - Veterans were repairing four marble plaques commemorating this coastal town's war dead after they were found vandalized last month. A city maintenance crew discovered the damage on Oct. 26. Vandals apparently tried to remove the marble plaques with a pry bar. The corners on two plaques were broken. One, with the names of four veterans who died in Vietnam, was completely removed from its mounting. Reedsport Police Chief Bob Gross said there are no leads or suspects. Repairs could cost about $2,000, said Jack Turner, president of the Gardiner-Reedsport Lions Club. Associated Press Email your...
