--> --> Storm dumps up to 17 inches of snow on central Oregon BEND (AP) - Schools were closed for hours and at least two cars slithered off icy roads in central Oregon after this week's storm dumped up to 17 inches of snow in some places. Mountain passes south of Bend were the hardest hit. La Pine got 10 inches overnight, and the Oregon Department of Transportation reported 61 inches of snow had piled up on the roadside by early Wednesday. The rough conditions made Edward Hubner, 67, and his wife Edna Hubner, 69, of British Columbia, lose control of their car that was towing a 28-foot camping trailer along Highway 97 Wednesday morning. The car and trailer slid into the path of a 1988 Ford Ranger driven by Carrie Bush. Rescuers had to cut a hole in the top of Bush's truck to get her out, but all three people in that accident were taken to St. Charles Hospital with only minor injuries. In a separate accident earlier Tuesday, three people were taken to St. Charles after Gwen Bailey of Sunriver spun completely around on Highway 97 and came to a rest on the slippery highway. Russel Kremer of La Pine and Mario Roque of Bend couldn't stop in time and collided with her car. Meanwhile, school officials canceled classes in La Pine and Sunriver Wednesday, and officials canceled all bus routes south of Lava Butte. Bend got about 6 inches of snow overnight and the Public Works Department tried to dig out using 11 sanders, nine city plows and several contract plows to help push snow off roadways. Mount Bachelor received 17 inches of fresh powder overnight. Bachelor officials reported 29 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. The snowpack is now 84 inches. Hood received 14 inches overnight, and Willamette Pass got 20 inches in the last 24 hours. This morning, chains were required over every mountain pass in central Oregon and up to Mount Bachelor. Those highways were closed to larger vehicles. Email your...
