Photos by Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies and Ashland police officers arrested two people from Olympia, Wash., after a high-speed car chase on southbound Interstate 5 Friday afternoon ended in a single-vehicle rollover accident. Alexander Carlson, 21, was charged with six crimes and is being held at the Jackson County Jail on $31,000 bail. His 15-year-old cohort was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center after the two allegedly stole a 1994 primer-gray two-door Honda Civic from the Meier & Frank parking lot at the Rogue Valley Mall in Medford at 12:30 p.m. Friday and headed south toward the Oregon-California border. The pair drove south on I-5, where Jackson County Sheriff’s Detective Colin Fagan spotted the stolen vehicle driving erratically and speeding near the Suncrest Road overpass north of Talent. “The detective was on another matter and the vehicle drew his attention by some inappropriate driving,” Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. “Then he (Fagan) started to stop the vehicle and it came back stolen. He was in pursuit until it wrecked.” A 15-year-old boy is arrested following a high-speed chase along I-5 that ended in a rollover crash. He was not injured in the accident. At 1:14 p.m. Fagan called for backup and followed the Civic. APD officers and a private helicopter from Brim Aviation in Ashland responded to help apprehend the suspects. Carlson, who was driving, ignored the lights and sirens coming from law enforcement officers attempting to stop the vehicle. He wove through traffic in excess of 80 mph, according to Winters. Carlson took exit 19, just north of Ashland, but zoomed back onto the freeway after crossing the overpass. At exit 14, the south Ashland exit, Carlson maneuvered as if he were going to exit. It appeared he changed his mind and wanted to continue southbound on the freeway, but the car flipped over and rolled several times when Carlson lost control in the loose gravel on the right shoulder of the road, according to Winters. It came to rest upside down on the shoulder of the road approximately 20 feet from the off-ramp. “He tried to exit at exit 14,” Winters said. “I think it was just a diversion move. He set up like he was gong to exit and pulled sharply.” Carlson fled from the crash site on foot. People at the Arco AM/PM on Ashland Street told Ashland police officers they had seen a man run toward the Wild Goose, where APD officers Theron Hull and Scott Schuster found him. “I went into the Wild Goose and he was kind of hunkered down in the corner, smoking a cigarette,” said Hull. Carlson was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempt to elude by vehicle, attempt to elude on foot, reckless driving, endangerment and fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor. Carlson had stolen a vehicle in Washington state that the pair drove to Medford, according to Winters. The 15-year-old, who was also reported as a runaway, was arrested at the scene by sheriff’s Deputy Jason Denton. He was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Jackson County Fire District 5 responded to the scene and both suspects were taken to the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford with minor injuries, where they were cleared to be taken to jail.
