Election-related letters should not exceed 200 words.   Do more than 'tolerate' I have been a Tidings subscriber since before I moved here in 2002. I really appreciate the new format and the increased content. I did not agree with your Our View on Oct. 9 on the homeless, especially the use of the word "tolerate." I am an advocate for the homeless here in our community and have come to engage the homeless rather than just tolerate them. They each have a story of their own to tell. I admit that I do not interact with the transients that seasonally move through our town, but rather the long term homeless citizens. Check out the Ashland Cmmunity Resource Center on Clover Lane next to the Emergency Food Bank. We are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Regina Ayars, Ashland   Voting for Bates As an Oregonian for over 30 years, recent to Southern Oregon, among many things I love about this community is the caliber of the person representing us: Sen. Alan Bates. I base this on a town hall forum, newspaper interviews and televised debates. I appreciate that Sen. Bates cares for all Oregonians, not just the wealthy who could fund his campaign for promised tax breaks. As a physician embracing improvements, he knows the struggles of all our community’s socio-economic groups. With a Republican colleague, he helped design more effective, efficient patient care. I am voting for Sen. Bates because he makes things better, works across the aisle to get things done, and cares about the things I do: education, our economy and health care. He has said he’d rather lose than run a negative campaign. Let's elect a representative who helps our community and won’t resort to negative campaigning. Adrienne Simmons, Ashland   Military label concerning We are concerned that in the current election for Oregon state senator one of the candidates is attempting to promote himself as a military officer. He cites credentials containing language such as "Army Command" and "Naval War College," and experience including "Military assistant to the secretary of the Navy."  As a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, I believe that our families, communities, towns and counties, populated by civilians, cannot be well represented by someone who focuses his credentials on military "command" experiences. Such a temperament is ill-fitting. Our people are not to be "commanded" as though we were soldiers, midshipmen/women, marines or airmen/women. Our senators must have a clear understanding that they are to serve civilians, not cadets or military subordinates. This candidate has a right to run, but seems confused about what the right demeanor, disposition and perspectives on service to our citizens are in our best interests as his employer. Clearly, our current state senator, as shown in the Tribune's Q&A on page A6 of the Oct. 13 edition, will genuinely serve our best interests. Please consider the real, meaningful differences and vote for Sen. Alan Bates. Lawrence Nagel, Ashland   Speaking of low blows In his letter to the Tidings editor that appeared on Oct. 13, William Meyer accuses Dave Dotterrer of a “low blow” against Alan Bates. Speaking of low blows and cheap shots, I can’t help but notice that he calls the latter “Dr. Alan Bates,” while using only Colonel Dave Dotterrer’s last name. Worse, he provides not a single fact correcting anything in any of Dave Dotterrer’s advertisements, which name specific votes on actual bills identified by number that substantiate the criticism made in the advertisements concerning his opponent — in other words, the only horrors are the hard true documented facts about the senator to anyone concerned with education.
