--> --> Foundation still receiving kicker checks in mail Ashland Daily Tidings In the face of decreased funding from the state, Ashland School District officials are turning to the Ashland Schools Foundation for help through the budgetary crisis. The ASF's "Kick Back for Kids" event allows residents to sign over Oregon tax refund checks to benefit students in the Ashland School District. The average refund this year is about $155. To date, the "Kick Back for Kids" has netted $9,285, with more checks arriving daily in the mail, according to ASF spokeswoman Susan Bacon. The ASD's current budget crisis stems from the threat that state legislators will decrease Oregon's $5.2 billion K-12 education budget in their attempts to make up for the $720 million budget shortfall this biennium. ASD officials expect to have to cut anywhere from $650,000 to $2 million from next year's budget, depending on what legislators decide to do. The shortfall is the result of lower-than-expected income tax revenue and Oregon's slowing economy. The ASF's kicker event at the ASD's community budget meeting Tuesday "was not overly successful to us financially," Bacon said. "We had one donation, but we continue to get kicker donations through mail. We are hoping that (figure) will continue to grow and people will continue to send in their kickers."
