The Grizzlies won the game easily, 52-24. It wasn't broadcast on ESPN sports radio, the cheerleaders didn't perform, and the game just didn't have the down-to-the-wire thriller content like the Grizzlies' 62-59 defeat of Redmond High on Friday night. Instead, the Grizz loped through the game with consistent, balanced scoring that slowly pushed Ashland (6-1) out of the Cougars' reach to a 52-24 win at Mountain Avenue gym. "It was a way different team," Grizz assistant coach Sara Barrett said of Mountain View. "I thought we responded well." Three good quarters Ashland started off strong, buoyed by eight first-quarter points from junior guard Alysse Carlson. The match-up had "blowout" written all over it, as the Grizz outscored Mountain View 13-6 through the first eight minutes. Then again, maybe not. In the second quarter, Ashland scoring only three points: one field goal courtesy sophomore forward Tess Golling and a free throw from sophomore guard Hilary Huyett. But the Cougars failed to take advantage of the Ashland drought, tallying just five more points before the end of the second quarter to close the half down 16-11. "We had a little bit of a lull in the first half," Barrett acknowledged. "We wanted to put a full game together and we're getting close." Here come the Grizz The second half featured a revived Ashland team. pressuring the Cougars on defense, forcing fouls and driving to the basket. The score showed reflected the renewed energy. The Grizz out-gunned Mountain View at the basket 36-13 in the second half, limiting the Cougars to just two field goals in the second half and six in the entire contest. "We did really well on defense," junior Grizz center Abeni Hill said. "We kept them preoccupied and they had trouble getting the ball in the hoop." While Mountain View couldn't buy a bucket, Ashland rallied, scoring more points in the final quarter (23) than the whole first half. "We just made an adjustment in our offense and it seemed to work," Barrett said. "It was an all-over effort today. We played as a team." Carlson had a game-high 15 points as four Grizzlies scored eight or more in the game. She also added seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Jamie Roupp contributed nine points and eight boards. Senior post Crissy Crager and freshman wing Shelby MacRitchie each tallied seven points to pace the Cougars. The best is yet to come Even with the lopsided win, the Grizzlies think they have room to improve. "I think our intensity was a little bit under the weather," Hill said, adding that the team continues to battle the flu. "It could take awhile, but I think we'll be a lot better by the time we get to the coast." Barrett agreed. "I'm really proud of these girls," she said. "They've been so sick and we won." Ashland will rest for the holidays and try to get over the flu bug before traveling to the Marshfield Tournament in Coos Bay next weekend.
