MUSIC NEA grants $10K to fund local concerts Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Jan. 6, 2016 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 6, 2016 at 12:30 PM By Local report Posted Jan. 6, 2016 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 6, 2016 at 12:30 PM » Social News A "Challenge America" award of $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to fund concerts and outreach programs by locally based Chamber Music Concerts (CMC) will make possible visits performances here by Sō Percussion, the Dorian Wind Quintet with Spencer Myer, piano, and the Morgenstern Trio. (This paragraph has been corrected to reflect that CMC, not the performers, is local.) In its first 50 years, NEA awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction, the only arts funder in the nation to do so. The NEA recently announced the awards, including the grant to CMC, totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round for fiscal year 2016. “We’re thrilled to receive this prestigious award from the NEA — they recognize the importance of what we bring to the community, and that’s gratifying,” said Jody Schmidt, CMC’s Executive Director. “The Challenge America grant will be matched by earnings from CMC’s Endowment Fund. Many generous donors have contributed to the fund over the years, so we’re very pleased that their gifts will match the NEA’s support for outreach and concerts by world-class chamber ensembles.” The Challenge America category supports projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.
