'Home' Paintings by Ken Frink at Hardwired Local Painter Ken Frink is currently displaying his recent paintings at Hardwired during the month of May. The show is titled "Home" after the dominant theme in his paintings. Of the more than 30 paintings on display, half of them are of houses. The styles used in his paintings vary from carefully rendered representations of his subject to an expressionist approach, using bold, crude brush-strokes. His acrylic paintings appeal to the tactile sensibilities, exuding a deep, rich texture and dimension in his work. The opening reception for Frink's work during May First Friday marked both Frink's Ashland debut and the grand opening of Ashland Hardwired. Hardwired, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m to 5 p.m. is a hi-tech community services center with office suites, kiosk rentals, and rotating gallery space. Frink was born in Ashland, attended Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland where he earned a BFA in printmaking. He then moved to New York City for several years where he showed his artwork and began working with children at a museum. This year he taught art at Phoenix Elementary School. He is preparing for his next project: a driving trip across America painting images of the country. Ken claims to be greatly influenced by his second grade students. "They are just beginning to learn all the conventional symbols that every kid in America draws. These generic icons (the stick family, the rainbow, the house, the flower) fascinate me." The subject of the show is the idea of home, comething Frink thought about often during his travels. "Last summer I returned to Oregon after several years in New York, he explains. "Feeling uprooted, I have a strong desire to connect to a place as home. Thus: an investigation into the idea of "home". What does a home reveal about its inhabitants... or the culture that created it? Meaning can be derived from how we shape our environment. We leave evidence everywhere that describes who we are.
