Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Fed up with getting beat by late-game heroics, the Ashland High boys’ basketball team turned the tables Friday night just in time to sneak back into the Southern Oregon Conference playoff race. Colin Reinstedt scored eight of his 11 points after regulation as the Grizzlies beat Klamath Union 65-58 in double overtime at Mountain Avenue Gym. The win cuts the Pelicans’ lead over the Grizzlies to a single game in the SOC standings with three games left in both teams regular season schedule. Ashland, which has three one-point losses this season (including a 53-52 setback at KU), improved to 10-12 overall and 4-7 in league play, while Klamath Union lost its second in a row to fall to 12-10 and 5-6. “If you play enough close games you’re bound to win one,” Reinstedt said. “We finally came through tonight.” Reinstedt swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.9 seconds left in the first overtime to give the Grizzlies a 54-51 lead, but the Pelicans stunned the crowd and forced a second extra session when Seth Hughes took a long inbounds pass and swished a 3 of his own at the buzzer. The rest of the game belonged to Ashland. Reinstedt opened the second OT with another trey from the right corner. Klamath Union answered with two Daniel Landrum free throws, but the Grizzlies scored the next eight points to finally put the Pels away. Reinstedt scored five points in the second overtime and Josh Cornelius added four of his team-high 19, as the Grizzlies went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the overtimes and 9-for-10 overall. Ashland’s remaining games are against South Medford (Tuesday), Grants Pass (Thursday) and North Medford (Feb. 21). “Mathematically, I don’t know what (the Grizzlies’ playoff chances are) like, but we’re just going to keep coming every night,” Reinstedt said. “There’s nothing else you can do.” Ashland needed two solid offensive quarters to overcome two downers. The Grizzlies scored 37 points in the first and third quarters combined, but just 10 in the second and fourth. Klamath Union trailed 40-39 entering the fourth, but scored six straight to take a 45-40 lead. The Pelicans still led by five with four minutes to go when Reinstedt canned a 3. Ryan Pittman stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored on a layup moments later to tie the game. Klamath Union’s Alex Foster missed an open 15-foot jumper with about 1:30 left in regulation and Ashland held the ball for the final shot. Sam Littleton, who hit three treys and scored 12 points, missed a 3-pointer and KU snared the rebound and called a time-out with 3.3 seconds left. That set up a bizarre play with 0.7 seconds left that ultimately had no bearing on the outcome: Foster’s inbounds pass went through the basket, prompting a brief KU celebration. The officials immediately waved off the basket, however, and gave the ball back to Ashland from the same spot. Ashland travels to face top-ranked South Medford on Tuesday.
