He writes insipidly in praise of George W. Bush on March 4, Bush's inauguration day. Lo and behold, he finds that on the same date in American history 72 years ago FDR took office, and 72 years before that Lincoln was inducted, and then 72 years before that auspicious date Washington took the oath of office. This triple coincidence is alone enough for Barone to elevate Mr. Bush to the top of Mount Rushmore; it must be "alone" because there is nothing in Mr. Bush's presidency so far that promises any greatness. Yes, "he has transformed American foreign policy" but in ways that make America hated and despised as well as weaker. And he has "proactively" - Barone means preemptively, unilaterally, and imperiously - used American power "to advance democracy and freedom," in places like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. Ignoring the nation's impending bankruptcy, Barone admits that it is too soon to judge this president. No, it isn't: Mr. Bush will be known as the most unworthy and destructive president in our history. Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Social Security plan isn't a threat The nearly 600,000 Oregonians currently receiving Social Security retirement payments can be assured that nobody wants to change their benefits. As President Bush has clearly stated, anyone over 55 will continue to see the program operate exactly as it does today. Establishing voluntary personal retirement accounts would go a long way toward providing the economic security future retirees will need. Without prompt action, younger generations will find themselves without the Social Security retirement benefit they think they are already paying for. Danna Gustafson Ashland Bush's SS plan shows leadership President Bush has demonstrated real leadership by identifying the problem of Social Security's financial problem. He clearly understands that the program design that worked half a century ago when there was 16 workers for every living retiree cannot function properly when there are just 3 workers financing the Social Security payments to every retiree. In just 13 years, Social Security will begin to pay out more than it takes in. The crisis could not be clearer. That is why Congress must take steps now to adopt personal retirement accounts now to provide true retirement security to all generations of Oregonians.
