Omar Faruk Tekbilek... To perform at the Mobius Sufi musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek will make his first Ashland appearance at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31 at The Mobius, 281 Fourth Street. The Sufi style of music is characterized by long notes without melody. "Each note is so beautiful that you don't want to go on to another note," Faruk said. "When the player emphasizes that note, you can feel the spirit come out of that one note. They are moving notes. Sufi tradition emphasizes that so you can warm up the tone and widen the note. It is beautiful." Faruk has mastered dozens of instruments including ney, darbuka, bandir, zurna, accordion, synthesizer and saz. He started performing at the age of 12 in his native Turkey. During the '60s he became one of the world's foremost performers of Middle Eastern music. Faruk has appeared with jazz musicians Don Cherry, Karl Berger and Brian Keane. He has composed for film and television scores, including the soundtrack for the PBS production "Suleyman the Magni-ficent."
