Don't let duck pond go to pot, poll says Lithia Park's lower duck pond is an important visual centerpiece for Ashland's jewel and must be kept up at all costs, a Tidings poll shows. This week, the Tidings online poll at www.dailytidings.com asked Web users: "The clean-up problem with Lithia Park's lower duck pond continues. How important is it that the murky water gets cleared up?" The Ashland Parks Commission recently gave local bio-engineer Paul Kay a fall deadline for his specially designed filtration system to clean up the pond. Kay has been paid $10,000 for earlier clean-up successes and will receive an additional $10,000 if his final filtration efforts come through. More than half of the 360 respondents to the poll said the murky water problem must be addressed. One hundred twenty-two people or 34 percent said it is "very important, it reflects on the quality of our town," with another 84 people or 23 percent saying the cleaning effort is "somewhat important, it's slightly embarrassing the way it is." Seventy-five people or 21 percent said Kay's work is "not very important, we have bigger fish to fry," and 79 people or 22 percent picked "unimportant, the ducks don't seem to mind." This week's poll question, posted Saturday, is: "Dead Indian Road was changed to Dead Indian Memorial Road, but there are those who feel this is still a slight to Native Americans. How do you feel?" The Tidings weekly online poll is an unscientific measurement of public opinion and only reflects the views of those who participate. Its sole purpose is to provide greater public input on a variety of issues.
