PUBLIC SAFETY Slippery roads blamed in fatal crash on Siskiyou Pass Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune DailyTidings.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 10, 2015 at 12:40 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 10, 2015 at 12:40 PM » Social News A Monday afternoon crash that killed a 56-year-old woman near the Siskiyou Summit likely stemmed from tires losing traction and the driver's attempt to correct as the pickup traveled north on Interstate 5 near Exit 6. According to Oregon State Police, the driver, 56-year-old Frank Wong of San Francisco, was driving around a bend when his rear tires "started to lose traction." "He stated he pushed on the brakes and the vehicle began to spin out of control," the OSP report reads. "He said he then drove off the roadway and into the grassy area to the right on the east side of the roadway." The police report goes on to say the black Toyota pickup rolled several times before stopping, trapping Wong and his wife, 56-year-old Yuh-Lian Chang, inside. The crash occurred around 4:25 p.m. between the on- and off-ramps near Exit 6, which leads to Callahan's Mountain Lodge and the access road to the Mt. Ashland Ski Area. By the time emergency responders arrived on scene, Wong had clambered out of the crashed truck. Chang was still trapped inside and needed to be extricated. She was pronounced dead at the scene. "I spoke with several witnesses on scene who stated they did not observe any erratic driving from the driver prior to the crash," the OSP report reads. "I did not observe any signs of impairment of the driver during my investigation." Oregon Department of Transportation officials said drivers should be cognizant of slick and icy spots in the passes, especially with holiday traveling season just around the corner. "Drivers need to respond accordingly," ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said. "Anytime they drive out or into the Rogue Valley, it's over mountain passes." "It's really important for drivers to remember what season it is and drive to the conditions." That, Leaming said, means slowing down, allowing for extra space between vehicles and giving yourself extra time to get to your destination.
