The historical framework of this country is not something to be changed by any group in power. It is not such a trivial thing that we bend at our leisure to meet our objectives. Yet amazingly, the Senate is intent on changing rules of governance hammered out over weeks of difficult political debate by the 18th century constitutional framers — a group many historians call the most important political minds in history. Our Constitution is not just a set of laws, but the very foundation of American Democracy that protects against dictator and monarch alike. Of all the recent mistakes of government, the effort to change filibuster laws is among the worst. Perhaps it’s time our lawmakers stop eroding the cornerstone of American government and take a tour of the archives, read the important text of American civics and be reacquainted with the oaths they took as representatives to uphold the laws of this land.
