Wednesday, May 25 Ashland Reads: The Rotary Club of Ashland is proud to announce its first annual Ashland Reads “celebration of literacy” for all first grade students in the Ashland School District from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the SOU Music Recital Hall, Southern Oregon University campus, Ashland. Students will arrive by bus at SOU and be greeted by Ashland High School cheerleaders, Rotarians in story book costumes and other community members. “Celebrity readers” will then read to small groups of first graders from their new books. Southern Oregon University Percussion Ensemble: The ensemble, directed by Terry Longshore, will present composer Steve Reich's innovative "Drumming" — an energetic, rhythmic and tuneful piece written for bongos, marimbas and golockenspiels — at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 405 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland. Reich's music has influenced many other composers and musical groups, including progressive rock band King Crimson, new-age guitarist Michael Hedges and art-pop and electronic musician Brian Eno. In 2009, Reich received a Pulitzer Prize for music for his composition "Double Sextet." Tickets are $10, $5 for students, and can be purchased online at oca.sou.edu/box-office , by calling 541-552-6348 or at the box office in the music hall. Students get in free. The performance will be repeated at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in the Butler Band Shell in Ashland's Lithia Park and at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Green Show.
