The win kept Ashland one game behind the Comets in the conference race. Crater is 5-0 and Ashland is 4-1 (7-4 overall). "We got the first goal, then it just started clicking for us," Grizzlies' coach Eric Wolff said. He credited sweeper MacKenzie Hedges for leading the defense. "She was a force back there, very solid," Wolff said. "MacKenzie is one of the stars in this league, anyway. She's very calm back there. Anything that comes down, she gets the ball and smartly plays it to whoever is open. She has an amazing confidence and calmness about her. That's why I had her take the PK (penalty kick), too." It was Hedges who put Ashland on the board first, hitting the PK in the 22nd minute after Liz Edwards drove into the box and was fouled. Edwards would get her scoring opportunities, also. She scored two goals to the lead the offense. Jessy Peters struck in the 26th minute on a pass from Kai Yearsley, and Edwards knocked in a nice header on a cross from Chloe Deckwar in the 31st minute, leaving the score 3-0 at halftime. Edwards scored four minutes into the second half, making a sliding volley on a cross from Molly MacGraw. The final goal was by Carolyn Thomas, who benefited from the strong passing when MacGraw's corner kick found Jubilee Sharpe, who fed Thomas. Wolff was pleased with Ashland's effort. "It took us 20 minutes to score the first goal," he said, "but sometimes you feel it out to see how things are coming. Then we got in the swing of things and it worked out pretty well. We played really well in the second half. We probably could have pushed for more goals, but we just played a good soccer game." Ashland travels to face Eagle Point (1-3 SSC) Saturday. Boys Soccer At Klamath Falls, Ashland scored three goals in the first eight minutes en route to a 5-0 SSC win over Mazama. The win improved the Grizzlies league record to 5-0 (9-0-1 overall), while Mazama fell to 1-4 in conference matches. The Grizzlies got goals from Brendan Golding, Corey Chandler, Rod Ramos and Tias Fitzpatrick and two assists from Ricardo Velazquez in the first half. Simon Lindsay added an assist on a nice through ball. "I think the intensity came in the second half after I talked to them," Ashland head coach Eisa Tiaa Tutu said. "We needed to show intensity and I think in the second half they did that, and I'm happy with that." Left fullback Reid Honeywell capped the scoring in the 70th minute for the Grizzlies. Center midfielder Alex Murray stood out for Ashland as he directed its attack. Ashland hosts Eagle Point Saturday night. The match starts at 7 p.m. and will be played at Walter A. Phillips Field.
