INNER PEACE Inner Peace: Creating peaceful relationships Comment By Jim Hawes DailyTidings.com By Jim Hawes Posted Apr. 24, 2015 at 2:24 PM By Jim Hawes Posted Apr. 24, 2015 at 2:24 PM » Social News You should have or could have done this or that. Why do you always think you are right? I am tired of those two metaphysical mumbo-jumbo questions that you are always asking me: "what is your relationship to the present, and is that ego or conditioned mind?" These statements or questions are examples of horizontal time which could be called psychological time. This is not clock time which we use daily to make appointments or plan a trip. This psychological time is aptly named because it is our mind or ego’s endless preoccupation with the past or the future. In spite of daily spiritual reading and guided meditation and our 47 years of marriage, the always-present ego rears its ugly head (albeit much less often) with these statements or questions. To get to more depth or to a peaceful relationship, we are choosing to be more in what many spiritual sages call vertical time. Simply put, this means living in alignment with conscious presence or peace.  Therefore, the most important question is how to actually live or be in this vertical (conscious presence-peacefulness), rather than be sucked down into the egoic horizontal time. The answer is simple if you can live or apply these simple, but profound three words: ACCEPT WHAT IS. You need to totally surrender to whatever you are experiencing in your life by being non-reactive and making no resistance. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche provides us with a simple, profound pointer: “For happiness, how little suffices for happiness! ... the least thing, a lizard rustling, a breath, a wink, an eye glance — little makes up the best happiness.”  I think he could have used conscious presence or peacefulness as well. Here are some simple examples or pointers to this vertical time or peaceful presence that have been evident this week: • My beloved told me very sternly that I should be more considerate or thoughtful in that I should place the vitamins in the exact or precise location. I could feel that devil, horizontal time (ego) urging, pleading for me to react with one of my spiritual statements or questions. But, instead, I caught myself and did not resist or react. • The sincere "thank you" for breakfast from our beautiful, joyful 13-year-old granddaughter enveloped me in warm, soothing peacefulness. • My daily walk with my dog abounds with opportunities to be in this vertical time or peaceful presence. Robins are singing their hearts out. Gently tossing worms trapped in the gutter curb back into flower beds or the lawns. Or spontaneously deciding that it was time to pick up the litter that I had passed up for two or three days. Talking to strangers as I kindly ask them about how they are doing. Amazingly, they’re suddenly transformed or aglow with a cheery warm smile and a hearty laugh. Is this not peaceful conscious presence? Isn’t this what the Dali Lama said, “Kindness or love begets more kindness or love”?   Jim Hawes, a retired Medford school teacher, has published "Ageless Child" (Balboa Press, Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles) and is working on his second book, "Consciously Growing Older."                       By Jim Hawes DailyTidings.com By Jim Hawes Posted Apr. 24, 2015 at 2:24 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
