HOMELESS Local bank grants $2,000 to Community Resource Center Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Feb. 25, 2016 at 7:47 PM By Local report Posted Feb. 25, 2016 at 7:47 PM » Social News Options for Homeless Residents of Ashland (OHRA) received a grant of $2,000 on Feb. 10 from Washington Federal’s Ashland branch to support operation of the nonprofit’s Ashland Community Resource Center. The center, or ACRA, offers a wide range of services to residents of Ashland struggling with low incomes or homelessness. “It’s hard to find the words to express our gratitude to Washington Federal for this outstanding example of good corporate citizenship,” said John Wieczorcek, OHRA’s board president. “Washington Federal is proud to be invested in the communities where we do business. We opened our branch in Ashland last year, and we’re honored to further invest in the community through this donation,” said Candace Selden, Ashland branch manager. A joint project of OHRA and ACCESS, “ACRC is a one-stop service center for people who are dealing with financial or other types of crisis,” explained Leigh Madsen, the center director. “Here people can get help with rent and utilities if they have a home. They can get sleeping bags, back packs, warm clothes, and personal items if they have none. And we work with other agencies to help them find housing or stay in the homes they have. We offer computer access for job searches and clothing for job interviews. Sometimes all a person needs is identity verification so they can access benefits — such as veterans’ benefits — that they already qualified for.” ACRC also has a travelling shower and washers and dryers for those who lack the basics, Madsen said. It works with a wide network of social service agencies and counselors to whom it can refer individuals. The center’s case managers track and follow up with those striving to improve their situations. A joint project of OHRA and ACCESS, the community action agency of Jackson County, ACRC served 723 individuals last year, people who were suffering some type of financial, physical emotional or other types of stress. A total of 42 families were housed through ACRC’s efforts and 63 families in homes received rental and/or utility assistance allowing them to remain in their homes. A brand new service, Job Match, a program between OHRA and the city of Ashland began in September and has already helped 14 individuals find employment. This program is also funded with a grant from Leightman-Maxey Foundation.
