OUR VIEW Our View: Bricks remodel is a smash Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News The design firm hired by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to redesign "The Bricks" has done just what was needed to bring the festival's central space into compliance with accessibility standards while improving the Green Show venue and retaining the look and feel of the iconic area. Landscape architecture design firm Walker Macy and THA Architecture, both of Portland, incorporated studies of the site and input from public meetings held during the design process. The existing slope of the brick courtyard does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new design will level the main expanse of brick. A steep grass slope will be retained for seating during Green Show performances, improving sight lines, and large concrete or blocks will provide additional viewing spots. The stage will be realigned to avoid glare from the evening sun as well, and incorporate underground wiring. The Bowmer Theatre will get a new elevator so that handicapped patrons can reach seating areas from the main entrance. Steps will replace the steep slope between the Bowmer Theatre and the Elizabethan Theatre. Besides making Ashland's premier tourist attraction more enticing to visitors, the proposed courtyard remodel will benefit local residents. Many locals take advantage of the free Green Show performances during the summer, making a stop at The Bricks part of an evening on the town that doesn't necessarily include seeing a play. Hats off to OSF for making sure the architects solicited and listened to local input in making design decisions.
