Ashland opens emergency shelters as lows dip below 20 Friday Dec 16, 2016 at 4:43 PM Dec 16, 2016 at 5:04 PM Local report UPDATE, 5 p.m. Friday: An emergency shelter will now also be open at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, from 7:30 p.m. Sunday to 7:30 a.m. Monday. ORIGINAL STORY: Weather forecasts on Friday called for the overnight temperatures in Ashland to fall to 20 degrees or below, triggering opening of an emergency shelter for the homeless. Pioneer Hall was set to open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, and First Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Siskiyou Boulevard and Walker Avenue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, the  city announced. Both close at 7:30 a.m. the following morning. Guests wishing to stay overnight must arrive no later than 9:30 p.m. Children and families are welcome, as are dogs. Drugs, alcohol, weapons, disorderly conduct and abusive language are not permitted. The National Weather Service forecast the low overnight Friday to fall to 15 degrees, and Saturday night is expected to dip to 17. The high for Saturday was predicted to be 33, edging up to 38 on Sunday with a low of 22 Sunday night. Regularly scheduled shelters are open Monday through Thursday nights in Ashland, with no provision for safe, heated indoor sleeping Friday through Sunday nights, unless it's expected to be 20 degrees or lower.
