Children’s pieces such as these will be on view as part of the third annual Kids Art Show at Nuwandart this month. Submitted photo “This show is usually the most popular show we do all year because it involves so many important aspects of our community,” gallery owner Jochen Ziems said. In the past this show was voted best show in Ashland by the Sneak Preview Magazine. This year all the proceeds of the show will go to benefit Whitney Chatfield, a young local cancer patient who attends Ashland High School, and the Lithia Springs Girls House, a safe house for girls with troubled lives and backgrounds. All proceeds from the sale of the artwork or donations will benefit these two causes. The artwork will be created by artists ages 12 and under from the Blenders and Mullys programs at Lincoln Elementary School. Mark Sherbow and Trisha Mullinnix, the instructors of these classes, have spent the last year working with the children on amazing art projects for this show. “Nuwandart was created as a non-profit venue for local inspiration and expression, hosting a fundraiser for local people and organizations who need support is exactly what we’ve always tried to do. It is an honor to host such an event to help the people in our community,” Ziems said. Trisha and Mark have suggested using the proceeds from the show to purchase gardening supplies to build a garden for the Girls House, which the kids from Lincoln can help with. “We thought it might brighten the Girls House a little to have a small garden there, as well as provide an opportunity for our kids to learn about gardening and responsibility,” Trisha said. Nuwandart would like to encourage the public to visit the show and help some of the less fortunate members of our community. The show will feature nearly 100 pieces, ranging from masks, collages, and ceramics, to prints, and paintings. “I’m always inspired by the artwork of these kids, it’s so pure and not jaded by the experiences of life that adult artwork must come through … It may be the closest thing to pure creativity we’re able to experience,” said gallery co-owner Rob Pendell. The artwork will be on display through the month of May.
