Main., for this week's Tuesday market. The market relocated to nearby ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum at 1500 East Main St. all summer because lead from an indoor rifle range at the Armory was discovered and had to undergo remediation at the Armory. That has been completed, but Growers Market shoppers will no longer be allowed in the armory to use bathrooms. The Market will provide porta-potties. The ScienceWorks spot was popular, with more vendor space and parking on-site, so the Growers Market will seek to use it again next summer, but be at the Armory at the beginning and end of the season, when school is in session. The Armory site has been a big challenge for parking and traffic, so, says Mary Ellen De Luca, senior market manager for the Growers Market, shoppers are encouraged to bike or walk to the site. The ScienceWorks spot may be desirable for shoppers, but traffic adds to congestion for Ashland Middle School and Willow Wind, thus making all but summer sales there impractical, she adds. The ScienceWorks site also doesn’t work well when the rains come, as it’s on soil. The Armory site is paved. The market pays less for the Armory site, $350 a day, while the preferred ScienceWorks site is $500 a day. This has resulted in the market edging into the red for the year, she says. The Tuesday market is now entering the harvest season and will run through the next two months, with its last day Nov. 24, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The last day for the Saturday Market on Oak Street, also overseen by De Luca, is Oct. 31. John Darling is an Ashland freelance writer. Reach him at [email protected].
