William Hagle | For the Tidings An old-fashioned town hall meeting took place in Ashland on Wednesday night, except that CSpan2 BookTV was there. The popular CSpan political book discussion show taped Jeff Golden speaking before more than 100 people at the Ashland Public Library. Bloomsbury Books of Ashland and Friends of the Ashland Library sponsored the event. Golden appeared relaxed and polished, frequently encouraging the audience to participate with him and each other. His book, “As If We Were Grownups: A Collection of ‘Suicidal’ Political Speeches That Aren’t,” published by RiverWood Books of Ashland, provided foundation for the evening. “As If We Were Grownup” themes came up right away, starting with Golden asking for a show of hands of those people who respect the state of contemporary politics. “Can’t get hands in the air for that one,” he said. Golden followed with, “Politicians say you have to talk to voters like children” which leads to a “cycle of cynicism and despair.… But I say, ‘People are ready to trade dogma for realistic answers.’” Politicians and their pandering to voters occupied much of Golden’s early presentation. His chapter on “Stripping the Nation for Parts,” about the Iowa caucus and how politicians promise ethanol subsidies to the corn growers, led to Golden describe how these same politicians go state to state and promise what voters want to hear. They do it that way, Golden says, rather than pointing out why the subsidies don’t make sense. “What is needed,” Golden insists, “is for these candidates to issue Americans a “Call for Greatness.” Audience members took pointed stances and asked tough questions throughout. One gentleman asked, “Do you actually know anyone who used your suggestions and was elected?” “Yes,” Golden replied, “State Representative Peter De Fazio.” DeFazio was one cited from four or five Golden mentioned. Other audience topics touched on media, a culture of sound bites, and the need for more town halls. Senator John Kerry and his loss in the 2004 presidential election came up late in the evening. Golden said, “Kerry lost because he ‘flip-flopped’ due to consultants who convinced him that Americans could not be spoken to ‘as if we were grownups.’” One final upbeat note Golden left the audience with is that, “We Americans (voters and nonvoters alike) are ready to hear so much more than our certified smart guys tell us.” The CSpan program will run in its entirety, likely multiple times, though dates are not yet set.
