Kitzhaber to head trade mission The Associated Press PORTLAND - Gov. John Kitzhaber will lead the state's first trade mission to Mexico next week, a country that has become a top trading partner with Oregon because of the North American Free Trade Agreement. State officials and about 20 industry representatives seeking to gain or expand footholds in the lucrative Mexican market will accompany Kitzhaber. The mission leaves Sunday and returns Wednesday. Kitzhaber will meet with Mexican and American trade officials while industry representatives will meet with Mexican businessmen. "They hope to come away with business deals. Both sides are ready and eager to do business," said Samuel Saenz, a delegation member who is the state trade manager for the Americas and Africa. Oregon sales to Mexico have soared since the ratification in 1993 of NAFTA, a treaty among the United States, Canada and Mexico that phases out tariff barriers over 15 years.
