Carroll, Mora honored as Students of the Month Jesse Carroll. Furnished photo Sunday Dec 18, 2016 at 3:16 PM Dec 18, 2016 at 3:16 PM By Ron Parker Ashland Kiwanis Jesse Carroll and Frankie Mora were honored by Ashland Kiwanis as September and October Students of the Month, respectively, at a luncheon Tuesday, Dec. 13. Kiwanis recognizes senior students from Ashland High School each month during the school year.  Jesse has challenged himself with advanced placement (AP) and honors level courses such as physics, calculus, environmental science, composition and government. He has also taken four years of Chinese language classes. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. In addition, Jesse has been an active participant in the school’s Key Club (as secretary) and the Global Citizens Corps. He also attended Boys State. Complementing these activities has been Carroll’s strong athletic career. He has played three years of varsity baseball and two years of basketball. He has shown leadership skills as captain of the baseball team in his junior year, plus he mentored another player. Jesse was also selected to the First Team All-State baseball team in his junior year. Jesse has also found time for significant community service and volunteer work. Examples include Relay for Life, the AHS Fresh Start program, and the Jackson County Fuel Committee. He also volunteered as a Little League Baseball coach, helped at the Kiwanis Monster Dash events and bagged food for the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. Jesse’s community service hours have totaled nearly 400 hours during his school years. Jesse is planning to attend the U. S. Naval Academy, majoring in either chemical or mechanical engineering, or possibly foreign relations. He has finished the application process and is awaiting word of acceptance. He has backup plans for other colleges or universities if necessary. According to Karl Kemper, AHS athletic director and assistant principal, Frankie is an outstanding student, athlete, and highly respected. Frankie has been a player for AHS teams in football, baseball and track and field. In addition, he helps out at the office of a local physical therapist, works with the youth at his church, and has worked with incoming AHS freshmen to help them adjust to the high school environment. Mora has also been a leader for three years at the AHS student newspaper. Mora has his sights set on the University of Oregon for his college career, majoring in physiology. He has plans make his career as a physical therapist. Both Jessie and Frankie were presented the Ashland Kiwanis Student of the Month award certificate, plus $50 in cash, by the club’s Chad Smith. In May, the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College Scholarship will be awarded to one of the Student of the Month recipients.
