Britt Festivals is the Pacific Northwest’s oldest outdoor music and performing arts festival. Set among majestic ponderosa pines and native madrones, the vast hillside estate of gold rush era pioneer Peter Britt forms a natural amphitheater where internationally renowned artists perform every summer. For 42 years, Britt’s performances, views, and casual, relaxing atmosphere have attracted thousands of music lovers from all over the West. Sara Evans sings in September. Comprised of over 45 performances running June 10 through September 20, Britt’s 2005 season features artists in jazz, blues, pop, dance, folk, country and classical music. The Britt Gardens and Amphitheater is located two blocks from downtown Jacksonville, five miles west of Medford, and 15 miles from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. In 2005, Britt Festivals will also be presenting concerts at the new 5,900 seat Lithia Motor Amphitheater at the Jackson County Expo Park in Central Point. Currently, three performances are scheduled with up to three more to be added later in the spring. The new facility offers 1,900 reserved seats and lawn seating for an additional 4,000. A season of big names Brian Wilson brings new vibrations to the Britt. Among the highlights of Britt’s 2005 season are performances by jazz artists Bela Fleck, Stanley Clarke and Jean-Luc Ponty sharing a bill, bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs, the reigning king of blues B.B. King’s 80th Birthday Tour with Kenny Wayne Shephard and Joe Bonamassa, Marc Cohn on a co-bill with Suzanne Vega, the unforgettable POCO co-billing with Pure Prairie League, folk favorites the Kingston Trio, rock ‘n roll power couple Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, singer-songwriter and guitarist Boz Scaggs, The B-52’s, John Hiatt along with the North Mississippi Allstars, and Pink Martini co-billing with Paris Combo. Then there is British folk-rocker Richard Thompson, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, comedian Bill Engvall, Violent Femmes and an evening of up-and-coming stars with The Waifs, Jackie Greene and the Duhks, plus much, much more. Dance lineup Dance will bring motion to Jacksonville Aug. 28. Britt’s dance lineup features two outstanding dance companies never before seen at Britt — STREB and Garth Fagan Dance. Clive Barnes of the New York Post says of STREB, “this is not like choreography you have ever seen before. It’s all high impact stuff — people throwing themselves against walls with bone-crushing abandon, hurtling down ropes and bouncing on trampolines … with oohs and aahs from the audience, and in effect at its best rather like a fireworks display. “Garth Fagan’s choreography has received a host of awards and honors, most recently and notably for Walt Disney’s The Lion King, which won him the 1998 Tony Award for Best Choreography. His company, Garth Fagan Dance, now in its 34th year, is at the top of its profession and is recognized internationally for their distinctive style and virtuosity. Classical festival Britt’s Classical Festival runs for three weeks, Aug. 5-20, featuring the celebrated Britt Festival Orchestra under the direction of Peter Bay. Caitlin Tully joins the all-star Classical Festival at Britt this year. Top soloists share the state with the 90-member orchestra in concerts that showcase the world’s great music and composers. Maestro Peter Bay has put together a varied season of programs with something for everyone. Grammy award-winning cellist Lynn Harrell headlines the Classical Festival. Other guest soloists include return engagements by young violinist Caitlin Tully and family concert favorite The Elastic Band. Pianist Muza Rubackyte, guest conductor Alvaro cassuto and pianist Barbara Nissman and world-renowned violinist Leila Josefowicz also join the Britt Orchestra to play beloved orchestral works by great composers. A special Orchestra All-stars concert spotlights the talents of four members of the Britt Orchestra. Now it its 43rd year, Britt Festivals is a non-profit organization that presents and sponsors performing arts and supports those activities through on-going education and audience development programs and through cooperation with educational, civic, cultural, and governmental organizations in Southern Oregon. In addition to presenting concerts, Britt Festivals maintains a formal education program through the Britt Institute. Established in 1985, the Britt Institute hosts a wide variety of learning through a multi-faceted approach of summer camps, workshops, artist residencies, grade school and preschool programs, lectures and adult learning opportunities. Tickets for Britt’s 2005 season have been on sale since March 23 to Britt Members and since May 9 to the general public.
