Walters, who transferred to Ashland in the offseason after spending two years at North, fared well in her first appearance against her former team. But the Black Tornado stole the show, winning a marathon match, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12. Walters finished with seven kills, 14 assists, 21 digs and two aces. North (7-1, 4-0 SOC), however, answered every Grizzly rally in a matchup of two of the conference's top teams. "(The match) was exactly what I expected it to be," said Tornado coach Ron Beick. "Both are young but really talented teams. "It was a see-saw match but was played at a very high level for this point in the season." Ashland (2-2 SOC) had a chance to finish off North in Game 4 but faltered late on a missed serve. Heidi Sandgren took advantage of the Ashland misfire and served out the game to even the match at 2-all. "She's absolutely great under pressure," said Beick of his senior defender. "That sequence definitely swung the match in our favor." The two teams traded points in the final set until the Tornado was able to grab a 14-10 advantage. Walters served Ashland to within 14-12, but North freshman Erica Schultz countered with a kill to close out the match. Lauren Berger had 16 kills and four blocks to lead North Medford, while Jessica Durham added 11 kills to go with three aces. Schultz finished with seven kills and senior setter Allanah Munson doled out 37 assists and slammed home nine kills. The Tornado's Kelsey Hamilton and Sandgren had 17 and 12 digs, respectively. Lindsey Stone led Ashland with 10 kills, 17 assists and 11 digs, while Madison Thivierge contributed six blocks, four digs and six kills. Cross Country ROSEBURG - Roseburg had the top two girls but Ashland's pack mentality earned it the team title Thursday in a four-way Southern Oregon Conference cross country meet. The Grizzlies scored 35 points to Roseburg's 37. Katie Wilton won the race in 21:18, but the Grizzlies' top three runners - Sophie Distefano, Natalie Hemphill and Chelsea Boehnke - crossed the line with nearly identical times, finishing fifth through seventh. South Medford's April Bradshaw was third in 21:52. On the boys' side, Gavin Weaver won in 17:06 and led Roseburg to an easy win. South's Zach Harris was the runner-up in 17:18.
