OUR VIEW Our View: SOU looks forward Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Southern Oregon University administrators and faculty are to be congratulated on reaching an amicable agreement on a new labor contract, avoiding mediation and allowing the campus to move forward with the next big challenge: finding a new president. The new union contract allows the faculty to make up some ground under the previous contract, which gave faculty no cost-of-living adjustment. The new three-year agreement gives them increases of 2 percent, 2.75 percent and 3.5 percent in each of the three years. A key provision is that assistant professors — younger, more recently hired faculty — will get 2.5 percent the first year, a recognition on the part of faculty negotiators that SOU needs to keep young, energetic faculty. We supported a proposal to link some of the increase to enrollment gains, but know there's a great benefit to the university in avoiding labor strife. The next step will be hiring a new president. Interim president Roy Saigo is stepping down when his contract ends July 31, and the university is embarking on a nationwide search for a permanent replacement. The executive search firm hired by the university will conduct listening sessions for faculty, students and the public next week to learn what qualities people want to see in a new president. The public session will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in auditorium 132 of SOU's Medford campus, at the corner of Eighth Street and Riverside Avenue.
