I’m currently starting my second year at Southern Oregon University. I love Ashland and plan to stay here. However, one thing about Ashland makes my childhood weep: the sudden “hazards” of slides in the park. My parents would take me to Lithia Park as a treat and I enjoyed that slide for all it was worth. The stings from the slide being hot in the sun, the sand getting into your shoes, all of it was worth because that slide was fun! When they took the slide down in Lithia, a part of my childhood died, and now they’re taking the one in Garfield Park down as well. When will this all end? I just want to know why, when I was little, it was perfectly fine for me to go down as many slides as I wanted, but now heaven forbid the children of this generation goes down one! Little Timmy might get hurt! Well, I thought a part of growing up was getting hurt ... and getting back up again. Please, parents of Ashland, tell me when the destruction of my childhood memories and the coddling of the next generation will end. Kim Gandee Ashland Facts hard for Bush to face The Aug. 28 editorial titled “Time to face facts,” spoke of President Bush’s denial of his mistake in having invaded Iraq. There are more facts it’s also time to face. Under Bush, America has become isolated, divided, belligerent and mean-spirited. Under Bush, America has become represented at the United Nations by a man who epitomizes these same characteristics. Under Bush, America has assumed the largest financial deficit in its history. Under Bush, the number of Americans living in poverty has increased from 12.8 percent to 14.2 percent. Under Bush, evolution can be equated to a religious belief in “Intelligent Design.” Under Bush, a presidential advisor can leak the name of an undercover CIA agent but go undisciplined. Under Bush, efforts to weaken environmental laws by deliberately disfiguring science, dumbing down issues, and replacing irrefutable evidence with political posturing can go unchallenged by Congress. Under Bush, Social Security can be touted as a crisis in immediate need of attention while millions of Americans without health insurance can be ignored.
