Both races are more competitive than they have been in previous years. This is the first time incumbent City Recorder Barbara Christensen has been challenged in an election since she won the seat 12 years ago. Yohanna Storm, a building designer and a textile artist, is running against Christensen. Both candidates said their goal is to make Ashland's municipal affairs more open to the public. The contest for municipal judge is hotter than it has been in years past as well. With Allen Drescher, who has served as the city judge since 1983, not running for re-election the seat is wide open for one of the three candidates running for it: Pam Burkholder Turner, Joe Charter and Mike Jewett. Burkholder Turner is Drescher's substitute judge in the Ashland court, where she has served for 19 years. Charter is a lawyer in private practice, a justice of the peace and presides over the traffic court in Central Point. Jewett is a former Jackson County attorney and an Ashland attorney. Tim Bond, the new artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, will moderate the forum. There will be prepared questions for each group of candidates after they each make an opening statement. All candidates for each position will answer the same questions. At the end of the forum, members of the audience will be given an opportunity to ask the candidates questions. When an audience member asks a question of a given candidate, each candidate for that position will be given a chance to respond. The other choice is the lady that has been doing a great job all these years after takening over for Nan Franklin. They both have the experience and have been loyal to the citizens off Ashland.
