Farmer Ashland As we embark upon 2005 we may collectively become vigilant, informed, and alert to our elected officials in Washington, D.C. This remains especially true for both houses of Congress: The House and Senate, which are already in session. Voters and taxpayers united must hold members of Congress both morally and fiscally accountable for their actions. Our national debt has surpassed $7 trillion and is climbing! "The Congress of the United States has become an overpaid, over staffed, self serving institution. It confiscates taxpayers' funds to finance exorbitant and unconstitutional determined salaries, pensions, and perks. Most members of Congress have become more accountable to the Washington establishment than to people in their home districts. Both houses of Congress are all too unresponsive and irresponsible, arrogantly placing themselves above the very laws they enact, and beyond the control of the citizens they have sworn to represent and serve." TRIM was established in 1974, as an educational campaign of the John Birch Society (www.jbs.org) and (920) 749-3780, respectively. Through TRIM, a person can become civically active in restoring fiscal sanity, accountability, and sound constitutional spending. Socialist and welfare state programs and legislation, which endanger our republic, civil liberties, and freedoms, can thus be eliminated via an active, informed citizenry. In October 1932, former President Calvin Coolidge and Al Smith (the Democrats' nominee for president in 1928) issued a joint statement of concern for America. Their warning is particularly relevant for today: "Unless the people, through unified action arise and take charge of their government, their government will take charge (control) of them. Independence and liberty will be gone, and the general public will find itself in servitude to an aggregation of organized and selfish ambitions." Christians are exhorted to pray for our national leaders and those in authority.
