Mary Ann Harris and her daughter found themselves in the midst of a raid in 1855. Indian warriors, seeking revenge for a Table Rock Indian village massacre by U.S. soldiers, began killing pioneer families and burning their homes. Some say the Indians especially hated George Harris because he had helped a muleskinner steal a young Takelma Indian woman. Whatever their reason, the first place the Indians attacked was the Harris’ place on Evans Creek. The Indians shot and fatally wounded Harris and a bullet grazed his 11-year-old daughter, Sophia. His wife, Mary Ann, pulled Harris into the cabin, grabbed a rifle and started firing. She held off the Indians for five hours, shooting from the cabin windows as Sophia reloaded. When it got dark, Mary Ann and Sophia hid in the woods and waited to be rescued. Eventually, Mary Ann moved to Jacksonville and remarried. Thirty-three years after the attack, the U.S. Department of the Interior granted her heirs $3,776 as compensation for the loss of the Harris home, crops, farm equipment, cattle and horses.
