While your local newspaper often uses a newswire service, it typically composes its own headlines which can convey a bias. Thus the Tidings chose "Israel Spurns World Court" to explain why Israel, quite legitimately, decided not to attend the ICJ in The Hague over the issue of the security fence. Article 36 of the court's statute stipulates that contentious issues can only be brought before the Court with the consent of all sides - clearly not the case here. In fact, 30 countries including the U.S., Great Britain, Russia and 15 members of the EU have submitted affidavits saying the issue does not belong in the court. The court's review subverts prospects for peace by undermining direct negotiations, diverting attention from the Palestinians� failure to stop the violence which necessitated the fence, and singling Israel out for opprobrium The court has never ruled on the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir or the conflict between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus where, in both cases, similar fences have been built. No outside court or international organization has the authority to determine how a country should protect its citizens. "Spurn" is defined "to reject disdainfully or contemptuously; scorn." The only disdain or disrespect shown here seems to be toward Israel.
