Steve Jorgensen is God. Hey Robo, maybe the backstop coaches are right this time. Forget this small-ball stuff. Just let your No. 7 hitter go yard. What else can you say. The Grizzlies have made baseball a spectator sport again. They've crashed our comfort zone, shot holes through the book of baseball plausibility, annihilated common sense. Am I there yet? Have I captured the madness of it all? Then give me a high-five and jump on the bandwagon, baby. We're going to Redmond, and right about now a chartered bus never looked so 'stylin. Whoops, I forgot the summary. For those of you who missed it (ha, ha), the Ashland High baseball team beat the Dallas Dragons 11-10 Friday, on a run-scoring single by Ben Dodds in the bottom of the ninth. That's the same Ben Dodds who had 13 hits in his previous 75 at bats. Dodds' single scored Jorgensen. That's the same Steve Jorgensen who entered the game with one extra-base hit and exited with three. Before that, Rocky Reeser singled and eventually scored the tying run. That's the same Rocky Reeser who oh, what's the use. Ho hum. Another day, another comeback from a 7-0, fourth-inning deficit. Only the season and a state playoff game were on the line. What did you expect: Predictability? Uh, wrong team. Wrong season. And check your heart at the door because we're going to Redmond. High five on the side. "I guess they just have a lot of heart, a lot of character," said Ashland coach Jason Robustelli, a.k.a. Robo. "They wanted to come back and they did it. They got the job done." Congratulations Robo: You win the understatement of the year award. Darn right they came back. Let us count the ways: o Weston escaped a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the sixth unscathed. o Robo had the guts to replace his ace (Chad Hegdahl) with Weston in that situation. o Junior varsity call-up Justin Meza drove in two runs with a single in the fourth. o Reeser went 3-for-5 and started the double-play that helped Weston get out of the sixth. o Jorgensen hit his first home run since last summer to tie the game in the seventh. o Arron Nelson made a diving catch in center field in the fifth that probably saved at least one run. o Jackson Rowe drilled a car beyond the fence in right field for his first dinger of the season. All told, the Grizzlies scored more runs Friday than in their previous five games combined. They had 13 singles, two doubles and two homers. For once, the words "hit" and "Ashland" can be used in the same sentence without the authorities getting involved. Go ahead and laugh. We're off to Redmond. High five down low. "Great team - I think [Ashland is] well coached," said Redmond coach Mark Horner, on hand to scout his second-round opponent. "Great kids having a lot of fun, they're fun to watch. In the playoffs, confidence is everything. You start getting on a roll, and I think obviously they have it - they probably right now feel like they can beat anybody. "Who knows. It'll be a good game so I'm looking forward to it." He's not the only one. Finally, the Grizzlies are hitting. Finally, the Grizzlies are scoring. Finally, the Grizzlies are oh, you get the point by now. We're watching baseball again. Here's hoping we'll watch some more on Monday. Can you feel the buzz? I do. And not a police officer in sight. What a game. What a comeback. And oh baby, what a day.
