Russian bayanist and American jazz accordianist to perform together World-renowned accordionists Stas Venglevski and John Simkus will perform a concert at 7 p.m. on April 22 at the First United Methodist Church, 175 North Main Street in Ashland. The program is sponsored by the Medford Accordion Club, which will hold an artists' reception following the concert. Stas Venglevski and John Simkus have toured in concert extensively throughout the United States and collaborated on a recent CD, "Seasoning," a compilation of contemporary pieces composed by Venglevski. Their musical partnership has resulted in a unique repertoire and offers an innovative musical adventure. Stas Venglevski, a native of the Republic of Moldova, studied at the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow with the famed Russian bayanist, Friedrich Lips and emigrated to the United States in 1992. His repertoire includes a broad range of classical, contemporary, and ethnic music, demonstrated in several recordings and CDs, commercials, theater productions, and most recently in a CD of original compositions.Venglevski has concertized as a soloist in the former Soviet Union, Canada, and the United States, including performances with many symphony orchestras. His keyboard artistry, dazzling technical command, and sensitivity bring an expanded dimension in music to the audience. Known for his smooth jazz style, John Simkus has been a longtime performer in the Chicago area with the Johnny Matt Trio and the Simkus Quintet. He performs in venues all over the United States, frequently as a soloist, and with various groups, including a European tour with the University of Missouri-Kansas City Accordion Orchestra. John is a director of the Accordionists andTeachers Guild, vice-president-at-large of the American Accordionists Association, and is recognized as an exceptional performer, workshop leader, orchestra conductor, and teacher throughout the United States.
