--> --> No more free java for Klamath inmates KLAMATH FALLS - Jailed java junkies in Klamath County will have to choose between going cold turkey or paying for their caffeine fix. Coffee was removed from the jail menu on Wednesday, although it's available for about 30 cents in the jail's commissary, said jail commander Capt. Chris Montenaro. It was removed from the menus after a state inspection of the jail's cafeteria program noted that coffee had no nutritional value, Montenaro said. "When it comes to spending our limited resources, we want to see a measurable benefit from each dollar," Montenaro said Thursday. "It was clear there was no benefit from coffee, so it was removed. This is a small change, but it is important." Montenaro said the final inspection report arrived Monday, and inmates were immediately notified of the change. The decision mirrors a similar one made in a Pennsylvania prison, reported Wednesday in the national press, but Montenaro said his decision was based solely on the inspection's final report. Aside from nutritionally devoid coffee, the jail had no other issues stemming from the inspection. "We passed the inspection with flying colors," Montenaro said. Email your...
