The last of January’s events is a talk by local presidential historian, Jamie Auchincloss, on Franklin Roosevelt, “FDR Revealed: Knowing Roosevelt through his Presidential Library” on Monday. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, considered by some the greatest U.S. presidents of the 20th century, not only brought America out of the Great Depression but guided the nation through the Second World War. Local presidential historian and political commentator Jamie Auchincloss will explore little-known facets of the 32nd president based on his research at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Part, N.Y. Auchincloss developed an interest in presidential history as a child in Washington, D.C. in part as result of his family’s involvement in politics. He has visited FDR’s library twenty times in pursuit of Roosevelt the man and the president. As part of the lecture, Auchincloss will play a recording of FDR talking of his hopes and plans for the library at its dedication. Having visited every presidential library at least once, he will share information about the presidential library system and how to do research in them. Auchincloss’ lecture is co-sponsored by the Friends of Hannon Library. The free lecture starts at 4 p.m. on Monday in the Meese Meeting Room (305) at Hannon Library. For information call 552-6835. Upcoming lectures in March include Connie Battaile speaking on the “Oddities of Oregon History” on March 9 and SOU Dean of Arts and Letters Ed Battistella presenting “Bad Language: Are Some Words Better than Others?” on March 22.
