LOCAL ROUNDUP Ashland girls get dirty, advance to 5A quarterfinals Harrower's late goal the difference as Grizzlies edge Corvallis in the mud By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 5, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News The Ashland High girls soccer team overcame a feisty opponent that wouldn’t go away and terrible playing conditions to pull out its first playoff win in six years. Facie Graham scored a go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute, then assisted on the game-winner to Jessica Harrower in the 74th, lifting Ashland to a 3-2 victory over Corvallis in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament Tuesday in Corvallis. The win earned the 10th-seeded Grizzlies a quarterfinal match Saturday at second-seeded Bend, which beat Springfield 4-1. It will Ashland’s first elite eight appearance since 2008, when it fell to Bend 2-0 at home. On Tuesday, the host Spartans twice came back to tie the game after the Grizzlies took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Graham-Harrower combination finally put Ashland ahead to stay. Graham dribbled around three defenders to set up Harrower, whose far-post lob dropped in to give Ashland the final momentum shift. After the final whistle blew the Grizzlies celebrated by sliding across the mud-caked turf, slip-n-slide style. “Just celebrating,” Ashland coach Eric Wolff said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been in the quarterfinals and it’s a good feeling to be there again. And the girls did a great job of playing as well as they could under these conditions.” Ashland (11-3-1), which has won three straight and nine of its last 11, broke through in the 31st minute when freshman Mya Elder-Hammond made a nice run down the sideline before passing ahead to Samantha Lilley, who calmly beat the Spartans’ goalkeeper from close range. Corvallis’ Mylene Gorzynski tied the game six minutes later and the score remained 1-1 until Elder-Hammond dished out another assist to Graham in the 53rd minute on a scramble in the box. Graham drilled the shot just inside the far post. The Spartans (7-5-2) answered again about 10 minutes later on a goal by Claire Atwood, but Graham’s goal with less than 10 minutes to go proved to be the clincher. Hanging on was difficult for the Grizzlies, who had both the Spartans and their sloppy home field to contend with. “Corvallis had to start sending more players so we had a couple more counter attacking charges,” Wolff said. “They were throwing a lot of pressure at us and it was getting pretty frantic, but our defense did a good job clearing it out.” Wolff said Corvallis did have a synthetic grass field available but chose instead to host the game on natural grass, which may have partially negated Ashland’s advantage in skill. Still, he added, they somehow managed to remain undefeated this season on natural grass. “The field was super muddy and super slippery so it was really rough for us to get our normal good passing game going,” Wolff said. Now, Ashland will face a Bend team that’s 13-1-2 and has advanced to the semifinals four out of the last six years, a run that includes back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009. “If you want to go far in the playoffs,” Wolff said, “you’ve got to win some tough road games.” Women’s Basketball Alexi Smith and Kristen Schoenherr scored 17 points apiece and 21st-ranked Southern Oregon hit 16 of 25 shots in the first half en route to a 101-72 nonconference win over Simpson on Tuesday at Bob Riehm Arena. Autumn Durand added 14 points and Courtney West eight points and seven rebounds for the Raiders (3-0), who led 54-30 at halftime. Esther Wofford paced Simpson with 26 points, four rebounds and four assists. Men’s Basketball Eric Thompson had 27 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks and 17th-ranked Southern Oregon outscored Simpson 15-3 in overtime to pull out a 90-78 nonconference win Tuesday at Bob Riehm Arena. Jacob Kaler added 22 points on 7 of 10 shooting and three rebounds and Tim Weber had a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals as the Raiders improved to 3-0. For Simpson (1-3), Anthony Williams had 18 points and eight boards and Jonnie Washburn 15 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in regulation.
