Few papers this small would headline such a subject. I have some comments and then want to flag those who suffer from this to a local opportunity. The public needs to be aware that in all issues of internal medicine, the fraternity of MDs, usually (there are important exceptions) suffers from a genuine collusion between the American Medical Association, insurance companies, and the pharmaceutical industry. (The same group, incidentally, which has continually queered any possibility of universal health care.) I suppose the motives of this fraternity are often un-self-examined. But they consist of a mixture of hunger for power, and for money, and simple conformity. As someone who worked in research among MDs for a few years, I can guarantee this. Fortunately, there are significant exceptions. MDs are not well trained, as a rule, in metabolism - particularly when compared with the new rigorous training in this among qualified NDs (doctors of naturopathy). If one has a serious problem, ideally one would be able to find someone who is both an MD and an ND. To illustrate the difference here, some 20 years ago, as I recall, very significant research was done in treating monopolar depression with various nutrients, especially amino acids, and particularly tryptophan. Then a huge scandal erupted when it was discovered that a few people treated with tryptophan aquired potentially fatal complications. The FDA passed an immediate ban on sale of this nutrient. It did not take long to determine that tryptophan itself is harmless, in almost any dosage, and that the problem derived from the contamination of one particular Japanese manufacturer's product. Twenty years, and they still haven't figured out how to change this ban. It took a fifth of this time to figure out how to make an atomic bomb, de novo. Reason? Tryptophan is dirt cheap, and over the counter; Prozac, Zoloft, etc. are priced out of sight, and you must go through an MD to get them. Also note that they have very serious side effects. As most pharmaceuticals do. Nutrients generally do not, as they have been tested over millions of years by actual organisms. My final comment is about bipolar disorder. This has been very effectively treated, in most cases, with lithium. Again, MDs are generally in charge of dispensing this. However, Ashlanders have a totally free source! There is a natural spring near the bandshell in Lithia Park. It is rich in many minerals, but particularly in lithium. (Hence the name of the park.) It dumps hundreds of gallons into Ashland Creek every day. For those for whom this is appropriate nourishment, go get your free supply today!
